Education Lab Online Educational Enhancement Study

Youth at the most elevated risk for violence involvement are also those that our traditional education system is least well positioned to serve. These young people are often years behind in school, and the same social and emotional challenges that may put them at risk for crime are also barriers to success in traditional classrooms. Furthermore, once they become involved with the juvenile justice system, these young people often cycle in and out of institutional settings, making continuity in education an acute challenge.

The Education Lab is partnering with the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice to test the effectiveness of an innovative, individualized virtual schooling program in juvenile correctional facilities. Utilizing computer-based classroom learning with support from a teacher, the Online Educational Enhancement program helps individual students approach their classwork at the grade level and pace that makes sense for them.

The Education Lab is studying the efficacy of this computer-assisted learning for improving the academic outcomes of youth in correctional settings.
